Encouraging Behavior: A Foray into Persuasive Computing

Whereas longer queries have been shown to produce better results for information seeking tasks, people tend to type short queries. We created an interface designed to encourage people to construct longer queries, and evaluated it via an exploratory Mechanical Turk experiment. Results suggest that our interface manipulation may be effective for eliciting longer queries, but the effect is compromised when instructions to create longer queries are given. Author
